Fall is such a creative time for us knitters. We think about all the gifts we want to knit, and, if you're like me, they don't all get done because other projects get in the way. Last week I decided I wanted to felt something, which I've never done before. I just finished knitting a purse. I made it bigger than I wanted because I didn't know how much it would shrink. I used Brown Sheep Lamb's Pride yarn. Tomorrow I will felt it. I'm excited to see how it comes out. Have fun knitting what ever you're knitting. YO SPIRAL HAT (LARGE)
I used Softball Polished Cotton with a # 8 circular needle.
Cast on 88 stitches. Join to work in round, being careful not to twist. Put a marker to indicate the beginning of a round.
Knit 3rounds plain.
Next round, *K6, K2tog, yo and repeat from * to end.
Next round, Knit
Next round, K5, K2tog, yo, *K6, K2tog, yo and repeat from * until 1 stitch remains, K1
Next round, Knit
Next round, K4, K2tog, yo, *K6, K2tog, yo and repeat from * until 2 stitches remain, K2

Continue this way, shifting the pattern row over one stitch each time, till about 5” from cast on, with the edge slightly rolled.

Begin decreases:
Rnd 1: *K5, K3tog, yo, to end Basically, you are maintaining the same pattern as above, but replacing the K2togs with K3togs. If you need to adjust at any point, do so.
Rnd 2: Knit
Rnd 3: *K4, K3tog, yo to end
Rnd 4: Knit

SUMMER'S OVER

This summer sure went fast, didn't it. I know we've all been knitting all summer, but now that it's fall we have to get real busy. The holiday's will be here in the blink of an eye. Personally I like knitting small, quick projects to give as gifts. That's hats, fingerless mitts, little purses, scarves, pot holders and wash cloths. I have videos for all of them on my youtube channel in case you need a little reminder, or inspiration. Well, time for me to get back to my knitting.

JOGLESS STRIPES

I've posted two videos on Youtube on how to KNIT JOGLESS STRIPES. There are 2 ways to do it. Both are easy and both give the same results. Watch both videos to see which way you like the best and let me know. Personally I use both methods, depending on which way the wind is blowing :) These methods only work on rounds of two or more. Unfortunately, I haven't figured out a way to eliminate the jogs when knitting a one round stripe. Have you?

CHARITY KNITTING

I wrote about this on my facebook page and got so much response. It's great to donate knits to charities. There are so many people who need the gift of warmth that comes from a hand knitted gift. WASH RAG 1

This is the first of a series of wash, or dish, rags that I've been asked to demonstrate. The video has been on Youtube, but now it's on the web-site. This first one is a simple stockinette stitch with a seed stitch edging on all four sides. If you don't know how to do the seed stitch, there's a video of that on the web-site and on Youtube. A larger version of this project would make a lovely baby blanket.

All year I've been thinking I wanted to make a video to show how to KNIT A BALL. Finally, a week before Christmas, I got to it. It turned out so long that I had to make it into two parts. LEGWARMERS FOR AN ELF

PICK UP STITCHES ON AN EDGE FREE VIDEO

There's a new FREE VIDEO on the Web-site that demonstrates how to PICK UP STITCHES ON AN EDGE. This is something you need to know for many different projects. I get a lot of e-mails telling me that the edges are rolling on a scarf. You can pick up the edges and do a few rows of garter stitch to rectify that. And, you will need to do this technique when making a gusset. You might want to pick up stitches to add a sleeve instead of sewing it in later. I could go on and on. Watch this video to see how simple it is.

HAT WITH FLOWER

Here's a hat I made for the charity I knit for. I made a flower like the one on the headband. To see the videos of how to make the flower (it's in 3 segments) click on the VIDEO button and go to patterns. I used Pearl Grey Softball Cotton for the hat and Rose Softball Cotton for the flower and the little accent on top of the hat. Then I crochet a few little chains to add as embellishment to the flower and the top of the hat.

HOW NOT TO CARE FOR A WOOL SWEATER

For those of you who don't go onto Facebook here's my story about the wool sweater mishap. My company, Topaz Knitwear, made 12 of these sweaters for a stage production of White Christmas. One got thrown into the washing machine and came out shrunk with the colors bled. Not good. I got the replacement made in time for the next show. Good.

I've been knitting a lot of hats while watching the Olympics. Ive made so many hats over the years that I can knit them without having to think so much. I'm trying to get a group of hats to send to Hatboxfoundation.org. Here's a picture of one of the hats I made. It's for a woman. Can you see the button on top? I always like to put buttons on as an extra detail.

that I use and love so I've decided to sell some. I've wound it into small balls of about 2 oz. each for a total of 8 oz. I'm selling it for $6 for all, much less than other people. INSTRUCTIONS FOR NEW STITCH ON WEB-SITE

A few days ago I got a request for a Raised Lace Eyelet Stitch from one of my e-mail friends. I went over all my notes and books and searched the web, to no avail. I finally remembered a lacey eyelet stitch and decided that was the same stitch with a different name. I added it to the web-site. To find it, click on stitches then keep going down to the bottom of each page till you see it. Video will come soon. If anyone knows of a different way to do this so called Raised stitch please let me know.

NEW FREE VIDEO - KNITTED TOY

Here's a video of how I made a toy Octopus. Except it isn't an Octopus, because I forgot to put on the eighth leg. Oh well, it was fun to make and went real fast. I used all the colors from Hayden's blanket and threw it in when I sent the gift off. In fact, I threw it in so fast I forgot to photograph it and now it's in another city.
(I'm disclosing all my forgetfulness in this post aren't I?)

MAKING TIME FOR KNITTING

Has anyone had any time for knitting in the last few days? I've been so busy shopping, cooking and cleaning up after Thanksgiving. We did something unusual this year. We made the turkey in the Bar-B-Q. It was smokey and succulent, but a lot of work. It had to be turned every 45 minutes, and the chips had to be added as they burned. I don't think I'd do it again, but glad we did it this time. This afternoon I finally sat down with knitting needles in hand and did a little work on a purse I'm making. I will try to get a new video up in the next day or so. So, the holidays are upon us. Happy Thanksgiving and Happy Knitting to all!

NEW FREE VIDEO- 2 color TRIANGLE

I've made a FREE VIDEO showing how I did the 2 color triangle stitch that I used in my Multi Stitch Baby Blanket. This stitch is very easy and fun to do. It can be used as a detail on a sweater or bag and I'm sure you've seen, or even made, washcloths done with this stitch. You could even do a whole scarf or blanket using this stitch in different color combinations. Ohhh, good idea. I just thought of it! I hope you'll try it and let me know what you do with it.

STOCKINETTE STITCH

Somehow I forgot to put the STOCKINETTE STITCH VIDEO on Youtube. It's on the web-site,
but now you can check it out on Youtube too. STOCKINETTE STITCH is the most common stitch in knitting. It's simply knit one row, turn the work and purl back the next row. It is NOT GOOD for scarves though because it always rolls into itself. Try other stitches that are the same on both sides for scarves. Look at all the different stitch videos I have for ideas.

I get a lot of requests to make more videos for sale. I have just made a new one that is a step by step demonstration of how to MAKE A SCARF USING THE LIKE LACE STITCH. I used two colors of wool. Most of the scarf is one color, but I added garter stitch stripes with a second color just to make it a little more interesting. BABY BLANKET

Here's the Baby Blanket I was working on. I love the way it came out. I used several different stitches for the squares. I made 3 strips of squares, picked up the stitches on the edges and did a few rows of garter stitch of a few different colors on each side, then I grafted (kitchiner stitch)the strips together. I used Softball Cotton yarn and a size 8 needle. I really didn't make a pattern. My way is to just start knitting and see what happens. Maybe this will inspire you to knit a crazy quilt blanket.

Another question I get all the time is answered in this video demonstration. HOW TO ADD COLOR IN THE MIDDLE OF A ROW. I've been making a little baby blanket with lots of squares, each one with a different stitch or pattern. One of the squares has 2 colors half and half, using this technique. See the picture here and I'll post the whole blanket when it's done.

BIND OFF EASY LIKE LACE STITCH VIDEO

For all of you who have e-mailed me about this, here's a demonstration of how to BIND OFF your LIKE LACE project. It's simple. Just use every stitch, including the YO. I suggest, however, to make things ever easier, start your project with a few rows of garter stitch and end the same. I hope this helps you. The next video will be a demonstration of how to unravel this stitch. Watch for it coming soon. I usually put them on Youtube first because that's easy for me. I have to wait for the web-master to put them on the web-site.

TRIANGLE EDGING 1

I'm still traveling, but finally got a new video on the web-site. It's the first part of how to knit a triangle edging. This edging looks nice on the bottom of a garment or on a scarf or afghan. Try it, you'll like it!

BEEN TRAVELLING

Haven't posted any new videos or been able to answer any e-mails for a few weeks due to the fact that I've been on the road visiting in-laws, kids, grand kids and friends all across the country. I've finally settled in one place where I'll be long enough to do some posting so look for a new video in the next few days and also e-mails for all your questions.
By the way, I get many requests for pictures of me so here I am, my face instead of just my hands. The photo was taken on the grounds of Tanglewood, the summer home of the Boston Symphony, in Lenox, Ma. on a beautiful sunny day.

THE STOCKINETTE STITCH - FREE VIDEO

There is a new free VIDEO on the web-site. It's a simple demonstration of how to do the stockinette stitch. The stockinette stitch is the most widely used stitch in knitting. It is simply to knit one row and purl the next. Those 2 rows make up the pattern. It's used for everything. Just remember that it does curl up at the bottom and on the sides so if you're making a scarf and you don't want it to curl use another stitch. There's no way around it.

This video has been on Youtube for several days and is now on the web-site. I'm really surprised about how much mail I've gotten about it. The garter stitch is the most elementary stitch in knitting. You simply knit every row. I always put the videos on Youtube first, because it's easier for me. I still haven't learned the language of web-sites and have to ask someone else to do it for me. The quality is better on the web-site, but if you have a Mac you have to go to Youtube.

BIND OFF RIBBING ON DOUBLE POINTED NEEDLES - FREE VIDEO

The free video demonstration on how to bind off ribbing on double pointed needles is now on the web-site. It's the same as binding off on straight needles, just a little harder because you have to eliminate the needles as you bind off and you have to be sure to do your knit and your purl bind offs in order. TOPAZ SWEATER IN HANNAH MONTANA MOVIE

Look for a big, dusty blue man's cardigan. I hear from the Costume Designer that it's worn a lot in the movie. I never got a picture. It was one of those instances where it was such a rush I didn't take the time to photograph it. I'll be looking for photos though and if I find any I'll post them on the web-site. DIRECTIONS FOR YO TRIANGLE

For all of you who have written to me, and others, here are the directions for the Triangle Scarf with YO increases. Click on the Patterns button on the left side of the web-site, then keep going till you get to Page 5. This triangle can be made with any yarn and any size needles. You simply make a triangle as big or small, as thick or thin, as YOU want it. The yarn I used was 2 strands of leftover yarn I had in my stash. Don't be afraid to experiment. Happy knitting!

HOW TO MAKE A TASSEL - A FREE VIDEO

There's a new video, a demonstration of the last step in making your triangle scarf. This scarf has one tassel at the point. If you were making a rectangular scarf or a blanket you would want more tassels evenly spaced along the bottom edges so you would repeat the process to make as many tassels as you need. RIBBING ON DP NEEDLE FREE VIDEO

For all of you who have asked about making socks, here is the first step....RIBBING ON DP NEEDLES. On this free video I demonstrate how to cast on, how to divide the stitches onto 3 needles, to knit the first row for an easier transition, and how to do the ribbing. I think this will help ease your fears. It's really quite simple and like all other techniques, once you get the feel of it you'll wonder why you were so fearful. Happy knitting!

YO BIND OFF FREE VIDEO

You've made your triangle with the YO edging and now it's time to bind off. Here's a demonstration of how to bind off with holes to give the same effect as the sides of the triangle. It doesn't match exactly, but it's close and it works. If you want the holes closer together you could eliminate the K1 stitch in between. YARN OVER INCREASE - FREE VIDEO

Here's an easy way to increase for a triangle and make a pretty lacy edge at the same time. It's simple. You just put the Yarn Over after the first stitch. That adds a stitch and makes a hole. You do the same thing at the beginning of every row so you don't have to remember which row you're one. It's a no brainer! The bigger the yarn and needle the bigger the hole will be. I used the Garter Stitch. Watch the video, give it a try with a few different sizes of yarn and neeles and let me know what you think.

FREE VIDEO - BIND OFF ON DP NEEDLES

Here's a demonstration of how to bind off on Double Pointed Needles. I hope that by watching me as I do it you'll see that it's not as scary or as hard as you think it is and give it a try. It's really the same as a straight needle bind off except you're doing it three times on three separate needles. Just remember to go slow and eliminate one needle at a time and you'll have no problem. And remember, it's true what they say, practice does make perfect.

FREE VIDEO - DECREASE ON CIRCULARS

For those of you who have e-mailed me to do a video on HOW TO DECREASE ON CIRCULAR NEEDLES, here it is. Basically decreasing is done the same as on straight needles except that you must choose only ONE way to decrease so the stitches are always pulled the same direction. In other words, you can either decrease by knitting two together (K2tog), or by slipping a stitch and passing it over (K1, Slip1, PSSO). On the video I only did it the 2nd way because K2tog is easier and self explanatory. I did the demonstration on a little hat. I'm trying to get through the never ending list of suggestions for videos so keep looking.

FREE VIDEO - BAMBOO STITCH

There is a new free video on HOW TO KNIT THE BAMBOO STITCH on the web-site. This is my version of the BAMBOO STITCH which I make easier by adding one stitch. It's done on a multiple of two stitches. On most BAMBOO instructions it tells you to start with a Yarn Over (YO) on an even number of stitches, but this can be difficult. For that reason I add the one stitch. Therefore you would start with an uneven number of stitches. The stitch is easy. It takes two rows to complete the pattern. It looks good on both sides so is good for scarves and shawls, but the true BAMBOO look is on the right (knit) side. Have fun with this stitch and keep watching for more new free videos every week.

Here's an easy, up close, demonstration of HOW TO DO A SIMPLE FAIR ISLE STITCH ON A CIRCULAR NEEDLE. It's different from the last video because this time the stitches will be leaning to the other side. As with the first one, I did it with only one stitch, but you can do the same technique using two, three or more stitches. I know you can because by now those of you who have been watching all my videos are pros!
